Liam and I first met in Richmond, Virginia as teenagers, and quickly became friends. In 2010, I moved to Charleston, SC to attend college, explore the historic Southern city, and surf on Folly Beach. In 2011, Liam and a contingent of Virginia friends, including our partnered hemp farmer, Matt, joined me at the College of Charleston. That same year, we started our first beehives in the backyard of our St. Philip Street home. We tended to our small apiary between college classes and weekends spent on the beach. Next to the beehives, Matt started an expansive backyard garden growing everything from tomatoes to mint and muscadine grapes. Not many people knew it, but our bees were pollinating the flowers all over the Charleston peninsula. It was an incredible home filled with laughter and friendship, and I’ll always look back fondly on those formative college years.
Eventually, we all moved on from that downtown Charleston house, but the years we spent there made an indelible impression on all of us. Matt would go on to start Ivanhoe Farms, an organic hemp farm in Ramah, Colorado, and Liam and I would found Apis Mercantile. Today, the three of us are still working (and laughing) together, and we are thrilled to combine our passions into one of a kind products!
